Rumor #1: Completely Portless Design
One of the boldest claims circulating is that the iPhone 15 will entirely abandon charging ports, relying solely on wireless charging.
What actually happened:
It did not. Apple's own announcement says of the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus that "both models use a USB‑C connector, a universally accepted standard for charging and transferring data", and of the Pro models that the connector is "supercharged with USB 3 speeds — up to 20x faster than USB 2". Every iPhone 15 shipped with a port. Apple replaced Lightning with USB‑C; it did not remove the socket.
Practical Guidance:
- Any USB‑C cable and charger you already own for a laptop, iPad or Android phone will charge an iPhone 15. Lightning cables will not.
- The port is the same shape across the whole iPhone 15 line, but only the Pro models transfer data at USB 3 speeds — on the standard models the socket is USB‑C at USB 2 speeds.
Verdict:
False. The rumour read a patent as a plan. Apple moved to a different port, not to no port.
Rumor #2: Revolutionary Camera Enhancements

What actually happened:
The upgrade arrived, but on fewer phones than the rumour implied. Apple states: "iPhone 15 Pro features an expansive 3x Telephoto camera, and iPhone 15 Pro Max provides the longest optical zoom ever on iPhone: 5x at 120 mm." So the long zoom is the Pro Max only — the Pro stayed at 3x — and Apple calls the design a "tetraprism", not a periscope. The standard iPhone 15 and 15 Plus got "a 48MP Main camera" with "a new 2x Telephoto option", which is a crop of the main sensor rather than a separate lens.
Practical Guidance:
- If you bought an iPhone 15 or 15 Pro expecting 5x optical zoom, you do not have it — that lens shipped only on the Pro Max.
- The 48MP main camera is on every model in the line, so the biggest everyday improvement was detail and low light, not reach.
Verdict:
True, but narrower than it was told. One model got the long zoom, not "the lineup".
Rumor #3: Titanium Frame and Durability Upgrades
Rumors suggest Apple will replace the stainless-steel frame with titanium on the higher-end Pro models for improved durability and reduced weight.
What actually happened:
Apple shipped it, and said so plainly: the Pro models were "designed with aerospace-grade titanium that's strong yet lightweight to deliver Apple's lightest Pro models ever", in "black titanium, white titanium, blue titanium, and natural titanium". The standard iPhone 15 and 15 Plus kept an aluminium frame.
Practical Guidance:
- A titanium frame is a frame. The front and back are still glass, and glass is what breaks in a drop — three years of repairs have not changed that.
- If you own a Pro, the weight saving is real and the drop protection is not; a case still earns its place.
Verdict:
True, on the Pro models only.
Rumor #4: Significant Battery Life Improvement
Battery life consistently ranks as a top priority for iPhone users. Rumors indicate substantial battery enhancements with more efficient chips.
What actually happened:
The chips are exactly as the rumour said. Apple: "the fast and efficient A16 Bionic chip brings proven performance to iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus", while the Pro models are "powered by A17 Pro, the industry's first 3-nanometer chip". A more efficient chip does help battery life — but three years on, the number that decides how long your iPhone 15 lasts today is its battery health, not its chip.
Practical Guidance:
- A launch-day iPhone 15 has been charged around a thousand times by now, which is where the drop in screen-on time comes from.
- Battery health is shown on the phone itself, so you can check yours before anyone quotes you for anything.
Verdict:
True. Both chips are what was predicted — and both are now three years old.
Rumor #5: Expected Pricing and Release Date
Consumers anxiously anticipate pricing details and release timelines. Rumors vary from minor increases to major price hikes.
What actually happened:
Apple held the starting price: the iPhone 15 launched at the same starting price as the iPhone 14, despite the new camera and the move to USB‑C, and the titanium build was reserved for the Pro models. The dates were ordinary too — Apple's announcement reads "pre-orders begin Friday, September 15, with availability beginning Friday, September 22", after the 12 September event.
Practical Guidance:
- The launch price is history now. What an iPhone 15 is worth today is set by its condition and its battery health, not by what Apple charged in 2023.
- Apple has since released newer models, so a second-hand iPhone 15 competes with them on price — check battery health before you agree a figure.
Verdict:
The price rumour was wrong and the date rumour was right. Apple did not raise the starting price, and it launched on its usual September schedule.
If You Own an iPhone 15 Today
A phone bought at launch is around three years old now. In that order, here is what is worth checking:
- Read the battery health first. The phone reports it itself, so you start from a number rather than a guess, and you can quote that number to anyone you ask for a price.
- Check what the charging trouble actually is. On a USB‑C iPhone, a cable, a charger or a pocket-lint-filled port explains far more "it won't charge" complaints than the battery does. Try a known-good cable and charger before assuming the worst.
- Look at the glass, not the frame. Titanium survives a drop better than the screen and the back panel do, so on a Pro the damage from a fall is usually the glass.
- Get the fault confirmed before you decide anything. A diagnosis tells you which of the three it is, and that is what decides whether a repair is worth it against the phone's resale value.
