“My laptop screen is black but it is still running” is one sentence containing two separate claims: that the screen is black, and that the machine is running. At our counter, each of those turns out to be wrong about as often as it turns out to be right — and which one is wrong changes the repair completely. So this page does not begin with a checklist. It begins by testing what you just said.
Start Here: You Just Made Two Claims, and Both Need Testing
Almost every guide for this problem gives you the same long list: hard reset, external monitor, open the back, disconnect the battery, pull the CMOS cell, reseat the memory. It is not wrong, and people do sometimes get lucky partway down it. But it is a list of treatments offered before any diagnosis, which is why it can run to a dozen steps and still leave you no wiser about what is broken.
Two tests, done first, sort the entire problem. Neither needs a screwdriver.

Claim One: Is It Actually Running, or Only Powered?
A spinning fan proves that the board gave the fan power. It does not prove the computer started. Fans commonly spin on machines that never complete POST (the power-on self test, the check a computer runs on itself before the operating system loads) — and on some models a board that fails POST runs the fan at full speed, which is exactly the machine people describe as “running hard with a black screen”.
Three tests, cheapest first:
- The caps-lock test. Press Caps Lock and watch its light. If it toggles on and off, the keyboard controller is alive and the machine almost certainly started. If the light does nothing at all, it very likely never reached POST.
- The blind-login test, and it is the one that answers the question. Wait two minutes from switch-on. Press the space bar, type your PIN or password without seeing it, and press Enter. Then listen and feel: the Windows sign-in sound, the disk light settling into an idle flicker, the fan dropping to a quiet speed. If your machine logs in blind, the computer is completely fine and only the display is dead. That single result moves the whole job from the motherboard to the lid, and it is free.
- The external volume test. Once you believe it has logged in, press the volume-up key several times. Most laptops play a click at each step. Sound means the operating system is loaded and responding to you.
If none of these produce anything — no caps light, no login sound, no key clicks — then the honest answer is that the machine is powered and not running, and the screen may be perfectly good. That is a different page's problem and a different repair, and it is worth knowing before you spend an evening on the display.

Claim Two: No Picture, or No Light?
Now the second claim. A laptop screen is two things stacked together: a panel that forms the picture, and a backlight (the strip of LEDs behind the panel that makes it visible). Either can fail alone, and the failures look identical from a metre away — a black screen. From ten centimetres, with a torch, they look nothing alike.
- Darken the room as much as you can. Switch the laptop on and give it two minutes.
- Hold a bright torch — a phone torch is ideal — almost touching the glass, angled steeply across the surface rather than straight at it.
- Move it slowly across the screen and look for a ghost: a maker's logo, a login box, a mouse pointer, the pale rectangle of a window.
- You can see a faint image → the backlight has failed. The panel and the graphics are both working. On most laptops this is a screen assembly job, and it is at the cheaper end.
- You can see nothing at any angle → no picture is being produced. The fault is the panel itself, the cable that feeds it, or the graphics output on the board. The next test tells you which.
- You can see an image and it stays visible when the torch is off → the screen is fine. The brightness is simply at zero. Hold the brightness-up key; some models need the Fn key held with it.
The Four Answers, and What Each One Actually Is
Two yes/no tests give four outcomes, and each is a different repair:

Notice what the second row does not say. “Panel or cable or board” is three very different bills, and no test you can do at a kitchen table separates them — it takes a known-good panel and a board with a working output to swap against. Anyone who tells you which one it is from a description is guessing.
The External Monitor Test, and the Trap Inside It
Plug the laptop into a TV or monitor with HDMI or USB-C. If the external screen shows your desktop, the computer and its graphics are healthy and the fault lives in the lid. If the external is also blank, the fault is more likely on the board side.
And here is the trap, which the popular guides skip. A blank external screen does not prove the board is dead. On many laptops the video output has to be switched on with a function key, and if the machine never got as far as loading Windows there is nothing running to switch it. So a blank external monitor only means something once the blind-login test above has already told you the machine started. Run the tests in that order or the answer you get is not an answer.
Three Things That Fake This Fault
- The picture is going to a screen that is not there. If the laptop was last used with a monitor or a TV, Windows can still be sending the desktop to it. Blind-fix it: press Windows + P, then the down arrow, then Enter, and repeat — you are cycling through the display modes without being able to see them. Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B restarts the graphics driver and takes about two seconds; if you hear a beep, something responded.
- The brightness is at zero. Easy to do by accident with a stuck function key or a cat on the keyboard, and it looks exactly like a dead backlight until you try the torch.
- It is asleep and the lid sensor is stuck. Most laptops sleep on a small magnet in the lid. A magnet in a case, a fridge magnet on the palm rest, or a failed sensor can hold the machine asleep with the lid wide open. Close the lid fully, wait five seconds, open it again.

When to Stop Opening It Yourself
The most-shared guide for this exact phrase walks a reader through levering the base off, unplugging the internal battery, prying out the CMOS cell and reseating the memory. On a 2010 laptop that was reasonable advice. On a machine built in the last few years it is where an evening turns into a bill.
Be clear about what those steps can and cannot do, because it is the part nobody states. Reseating memory and clearing the CMOS can only help a machine that is failing to start. They cannot repair a failed backlight and they will not fix a cracked or dead panel — if the torch test showed you a ghost image, no amount of opening the case will bring the light back, because the part that failed is not one you are touching.
- A swollen battery. If the trackpad sits proud, the base bows, or the lid no longer closes flat, stop. Puncturing a lithium cell that is already under pressure is a fire risk, and it is done with very little force.
- The ribbon cables. The display cable runs through the hinge and its connector is often smaller than a grain of rice. It is the part most easily damaged in an amateur teardown, the damage is usually permanent, and it turns a working panel into a replaced one.
- Warranty. On many brands, opening the base voids the warranty — there is a seal or a screw that records it. A repair that would have been free can stop being free before you reach the memory.
