Find your symptom below for the likely cause, the price it starts from, and how long it usually takes. The diagnosis is always free, and we confirm the exact price before any work begins.
| What's happening | Likely cause | From | Typical time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cracked, black or lines across the screen | LCD panel | $186 | 1–2 hours (some models longer) |
| Dies quickly, or won't hold charge | Battery | $86 | 30–45 minutes |
| Keys not typing, or liquid spilled on them | Keyboard | $186 | 2–3 hours |
| No power at all, or won't boot to Windows | Motherboard (free diagnosis first) | $186 | Depends on parts |
| Lid loose, wobbly or cracking the casing | Hinge | $90 | Depends on parts |
| Very slow, or Windows won't load | OS reinstall / reformat | $65 | Same day |
| Deleted or lost your files | Data recovery | $95 | Assessed first |
One line in that table has no fixed price, and here is why. When a laptop arrives dead, we cannot see past the fault. We cannot test the hard disk, or anything else that needs power to be tested — those can only be checked after the motherboard repair is finished. That uncertainty is what moves the price on this one job up or down, and it is why we diagnose free instead of quoting you a number we would have to change later.

In almost every repair, no — a screen, battery, keyboard or hinge never touches your files. The one exception is a repair that has to reinstall Windows, such as a badly corrupted system, and we always tell you before we do it so you can decide. If your files matter, just say so when you hand the laptop over. And if data has already been lost, we recover it — from $95. Even so, we strongly recommend backing up your important files before you bring the laptop in — Esmond Service Centre is not responsible for any loss of data.
We repair Dell, HP, MacBook, Gaming Laptops & More — Fast, Reliable, Affordable
Customers worry about this, so we would rather explain it before you hand the laptop over than after.
Apple, Lenovo, HP and Acer do not make their own cases, keyboards and batteries — other manufacturers make those parts for them. Esmond Service Centre orders direct from the manufacturers who actually make the part, which is why we can call it OEM: original, original-equivalent. What changes is the printing. Because the part comes to us straight from the maker instead of the long way round through HP or Lenovo, it often arrives with no brand wording and no brand icon on it. Some carry a logo. Some do not. A missing logo tells you the supply chain was shorter. It does not tell you the part is a copy.
Three brands are different. For MSI, Apple and Actxa we hold genuine parts with the logo, because we are an Apple Independent Repair Provider and an MSI and Actxa Authorised Service Provider, with technicians trained and certified by all three. On every other brand — Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, Asus, Razer, Samsung and the rest — we are an independent repairer, and we say so rather than claim an authorisation nobody has given us. Whichever part goes in, the 90-day warranty covers the part we fitted and the work we did. If the logo matters to you, tell us before we start.
We will tell you when the answer is no. A battery, screen, keyboard or hinge on an otherwise healthy laptop is almost always worth fixing. A failed motherboard on an old, slow machine often isn't. Beyond that, there are two jobs we usually talk people out of. The first is bad water damage — not a splash, but the kind where the keyboard, the motherboard, the LCD screen and the battery are all dead at once. We can quote all of it. But once you have paid for all of it you are close enough to a new machine that we would rather you topped up a little and bought one. A water-damaged device also carries no warranty after repair: a board that has been wet can fail again for reasons no repairer controls, which is exactly why we will not promise cover on it.
The second is a very old laptop. Ten years old. Twelve. Fifteen. Change the keyboard and it will work. Change the screen or the battery and it will work, and the machine will still run. What we cannot promise is how long. We have watched customers spend more than the price of a new laptop keeping a twelve-year-old machine going — the keyboard is changed today, and three months later the screen fails, or six months later the motherboard fails, and sometimes it is a few days later. The one job that is still worth doing on an old laptop is a Windows reinstall: at $65 it is the cheapest thing on our price list. The diagnosis is free either way, so you decide with the real number in front of you — and if we don't think you should repair it, we'll say so.
| The job | Time on the bench |
|---|---|
| Laptop screen — normal laptop | 1–2 hours |
| Laptop screen — Surface laptop (the panel is bonded with adhesive) | 2–3 hours |
| Laptop screen — models that must be dismantled completely to reach the panel | 3–4 hours |
| Laptop keyboard — normal laptop | 2–3 hours |
| Laptop keyboard — Microsoft Surface | 4–5 hours |
| Laptop battery | 30–45 minutes |
| OS reinstall / reformat | Same day |
| Motherboard, hinge | Depends on parts |
A screen is quicker than a keyboard, and customers always ask why. On most laptops now the keyboard is not screwed in — it is held down by plastic rivets, and every one of those rivets has to be soldered back, one at a time. Then the machine goes back together. Then we test the keys one by one. If something is off at that point, we may have to dismantle it again and fit another new keyboard. Dismantle, solder, reassemble, test — that is where the hours go, and on a Microsoft Surface it is longer again.
We collect island-wide. Two-way collection and delivery is $43.60 (incl. 9% GST); one-way is $21.80 (incl. 9% GST). No hidden charges — that is the price.

Here is what actually lands on our bench most days: screen replacement — cracked screens, lines across the screen, screens that flicker — laptops that will not power on, faulty wifi cards, and cracked hinges. The ones that will not power on are motherboard hardware issues. Here are the common laptop issues we fix:
Not sure what's wrong? Tell us the symptom in the form above and we'll come back with what it likely is, what it costs and how long it takes — or just contact us.
Most of what we say at the front desk is not about the repair. It is about correcting something the customer worked out on their own, or was told somewhere else. These four come up again and again, and each one costs money if you act on it.
This is the one we hear most. The customer says the laptop cannot power on, and very often it is powering on perfectly well — the screen is spoilt, so all you get is black. That is a screen job, not a motherboard job, and there is no way to tell from the outside. It is one of the reasons we look before we quote.
People blame the battery when a laptop will not start. It is the wrong suspect: a laptop will still power on with the charger plugged in, battery or no battery. So if it will not power on even with the charger plugged in, it is 99.9% a motherboard hardware issue. A battery is the cheaper repair for us to sell you. It is still the wrong answer, so we will not sell it to you.
Customers ask us for 32GB or 64GB because they have read that more RAM means a faster laptop. It depends entirely on what you use it for. For normal internet browsing, 8GB is enough. 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and above are for work like 3D rendering. And if it is gaming you are thinking about, that is mostly your internet speed and your graphics card — RAM is rarely what is holding it back. We would rather say that than sell you memory you will never use.
This is the one that decides how much you spend, so we will be plain about it. A motherboard replacement usually costs about half the price of a new laptop, and sometimes more than buying a new one — which is why replacing the board is not where we start. What we do instead is repair the board itself: we find the faulty component on the motherboard and replace that component with an original one, and the board stays in your machine. That is what the price-list row "Motherboard Repair (Standard Windows Laptop) — Fr $186" above means. So we attempt the repair first, every time. If the board genuinely cannot be repaired, we then work out whether replacing it is economical on your machine — and if it is not, we tell you straight that the repair failed as beyond economical repair, rather than fit a board that costs more than your laptop is worth.
Students, working professionals and businesses use Esmond Service Centre because the diagnosis is free, the price is confirmed before any work starts, and we say so when a repair is not worth buying. Walk in to Alexandra or Sin Ming, or tell us the symptom in the form above.
Had a battery alert warning this morning on my HP Spectre laptop. Ran a battery test and the capacity is only left with 23% despite component test shows Passed. HP support ask me to calibrate the battery which is a very lengthy and tedious procedure and it does not solve the original battery issue of degraded capacity. HP Support also need time (the whole day also never get back to me) to check for stocks and price. I just need a faster clean fix to this issue i.e. simply replace the battery. Searched the Internet and found Esmond Service Centre with good reviews. Fast response and helpful advice. They transferred the battery to the branch at MidView in 2 hours and changed my battery within 30 to 40mins when I was on-site. Price was competitive compared to other quotes I got and also purchased the extended warranty for 1 year for $48. They also provided after sales customer service when I asked about my chargers. Not like some shops who will ignore you after the purchase. Great service and will look for them in future if I need to repair my laptop.
